Cos d'Estournel has again turned out one of the vintage's finest wines. Proprietor Bruno Prats and his son, Jean-Guillaume, claim that for most of the Cos d'Estournel vineyard, there was a minimum of 120 days between flowering and harvest. In normal years, 105-110 days are usual. The opaque purple-colored 1997 Cos d'Estournel offers up a gorgeously sweet nose consisting of ripe black currant fruit, Provencal olives, smoked herbs, pain grille and licorice. Rich and powerful, as well as elegant and stylish, this wine possesses plenty of fat, in addition to layers of fruit and glycerin. It is an intensely charming, graceful yet impressively-endowed Cos that should be, because of its low acidity and sweet tannin, delicious when young. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2016.
